Powder Mountain is hosting its first annual ski benefit on Friday, April 24 for the family of Brett S. Earl.  Earl, a resident of Eden , died unexpectedly of heart attack on April 11, 2009 at the age of 39.  100% of the proceeds will go directly to the Earl family – Darnelle, Riley, Raj, Taj and India .

Powder Mountain will open Sundown Lift and Lodge from noon – 8pm on Friday, April 24.  The fun of skiing and sledding in springtime conditions will be enhanced by a live music, a silent auction and a barbeque.  A snowcat will be escorting non-skiers on scenic tours of Lightning Ridge.  A minimum donation of $15 per person will provide participants with either a Sundown lift pass or one ride on the Lightning Ridge snowcat.

Passes are available at www.powdermountain.com or at the Sundown Lodge on the day of the event.  For more information, call 801-745-3772 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Donations may also be made to the Brett Earl Family Education and Mission Fund at any Goldenwest Credit Union.

sundown_lift_at_powder_mountain_sany0110What is a young middle aged totally cool skier to do? The lure of warm gondolas, adult conversation and extraordinary snow, plus the best meatloaf in the universe for lunch, pulls one to the Basin. On the other hand, the lack of crowds, the new high-speed quad, and extraordinary snow, plus chili cheese fries to die for, pulls one to Pow Mow.

Written by Bryan J. Smith

Powder Mountain is now open for day skiing as well as night skiing.

Sundown and Timberline lifts will begin running for the 08/09 season at 9:00am on Friday, December 19. Until additional lifts open, adult lift passes will be $32 and children (7 -12 years) will be $20. Everyone do your best snow dance. We want everything open!

Backcountry Magazine Gear Guide RendevousBackcountry Magazine and Outside Magazine gets together at Powder Mountain, in Ogden Valley Utah to test out the latest backcountry skiing hardware for the '08-'09 season.

Talk about a bevy of boards, boots and bindings.  The editors of Backcounty and Outside Mags once again pulled together a hand picked group of expert skiiers from all over the US to come do their testing at Powder Mountain.  Over the course of eight days these guys and gals worked their way through over 180 pairs of skis, 70 sets of free heel bindings and a truckload of boots!!  Talk about lugging a lot of gear to the mountain, these guys had piles of it!!  Not only that, but it was all the latest and greatest stuff.  Carbon fiber everywhere!!

We were lucky enough to spend some time with the crew while they tested the gear and shared their thoughts on what's hot and what's not.  We had promise not to spill the beans though, so make sure you check out OutsideMagazine.com and BackcountryMagazine.com so you can find out where you can get your hands on next year's gear guide review.

You can also read more about the gathering at http://www.backcountrymagazine.com/pmt_skitest_mar08.html

snowbasin_racing_snowdance_1-willowbranches.jpgIn the beginning...the early 1940s...there was no team...no coach. Just a bunch of kids who dreamed of being ski racers. Along the banks of the Ogden river they cut willow branches  ... hauled them to the mountain...and jammed them into the snow on City Hill for gates. A fast rope tow pulled them to the start line again and again until their legs, or gloves, gave out.  snowbasin_racing_snowdance_2-ropetow.jpgBoots were leather and laced up.Bindings were bear trap. Much of their clothing was cotton and soaked most of each day...until freezing stiff. Metal edges appeared as an innovation, and screwed onto skis in sections.snowbasin_racing_snowdance_3-laceupboots.jpg
