A GENTLE APPROACH TO WELLNESS
By:  Nancy Seraphin

In an area that offers 360◦ of diverse recreational opportunities, one of the potential downsides to all the fun is that, well, injuries do happen.  Whether skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, wakeboarding, fishing or simply bending over to pick up something, the best preventative medicine is to keep yourself in good physical condition.  Fortunately, there are several great practitioners right here in the Ogden Valley who can gently help you do just that.  (Pick up or order your free magazine to read more)

LackeyNEWCOMERS RON AND JOELY LACKEY
Back to their agricultural roots…
By: Drienie Hattingh

As Joely and Ron Lackey came over Trappers Loop one spring and the Valley unfolded below them, they were in awe.

It was love at first sight for Joely.  “It was beautiful – the lake, the mountains, the wide-open spaces,” she said.

“For me,” says Ron, “All the farms and open land reminded me of Kansas where I grew up.”

Joelyhorses on just about every property as they drove through the Valley. “And the rural environment surprised me,” she says.

“I just loved the old barns,” Ron said. “I was also amazed at all the agriculture – just seeing the open space sold me!  Living in Salt Lake City we only had the mountains and buildings.”  The Lackeys had lived on small steep lot and decided to leave that environment to find a new home with lots of flat, open land.  (Pick up or order your free magazine to read more)

Ogden Valley Pathways
PINEVIEW WEST TRAIL – Into the Woods
By  Nancy Seraphin

For those who may be short on time, or not in as good physical condition as they’d like, the Eden’s Pineview West Trail is a good start for hiking, biking or mountain biking, providing linkage to several longer, more difficult routes.  Round trip, Pineview West Trail is about 6 miles, and the trailhead offers three different directional choices and experiences. The trailhead is one of the obvious in the Valley. The parking lot is located in Eden at the intersection of State Highway 158 and Highway 166, just south west of the “Y” in the road along the north shore of Pineview Reservoir (please refer to map marker #4 on centerfold map.)  (Pick up or order your free magazine to read more)

RICHARD WOOD - POWDER MOUNTAIN’S ORIGINAL HIGH-SPEED LIFT
By:  Nancy Seraphin

Powder Mountain's Richard Wood

It’s obvious from the twinkle in his eye and the smile on his face that this man loves what he does. As we chat leisurely in his very tidy living room in Huntsville, he is obviously beaming with pride at the stately plaque that’s prominently displayed - the “2007/2008 Lifetime Achievement Awardfrom Powder Mountain ski resort, also called the James Peak Award.

Richard Wood, or simply “Woody” as he’s known around the world, has been driving the “Powder Country” shuttle bus for Powder Mountain since 1983. Powder Country remains to this day one of the most unique adventures offered by any ski resort. It’s an area that would traditionally be considered backcountry skiing and offers fantastic tree skiing, riding with almost limitless lines, and 1,200 feet of vertical. The terrain was being skied all the time, and the Cobabe family, who founded the resort, figured they ought to offer some way for their guests to get back up the hill besides hitchhiking. Lynn Federspiel-Young ArtistA VISIT WITH AN ARTIST…
By: Drienie Hattingh

LYNN FEDERSPIEL-YOUNG
Painter, Minimalist, Collage Artist, Teacher...

Lynn Federspiel-Young stands before the easel and the blank canvas, peering through her window. Her eyes are fixed on Ben Lomond’s snowcapped peak.  Trees and brush in her yard show the first signs of green on this cold April morning.  Then Lynn picks up a paintbrush, and a couple of hours later, a beautiful scene unfolds on the canvas. Evergreens dot snow-covered slopes and beyond it all, reigns the towering Wasatch Mountains.

In the midst of creating this idyllic, but realistic winter landscape, the artist forgets everything around her – completely losing track of time.  (Pick up or order your free magazine to read more)
