nordic_valley_fire_crew_dsc00352.jpgOn June 24,  800 fires destroyed 17 homes in California.  On that same day, 50 families in Nordic Valley took steps to protect their homes from wild fire.  Each participated in the Nordic Valley Firewise Annual clean up in an effort to create a defensible space around their home.

On June 24 – 27 a crew of nine kept busy chipping landscaping debris that residents had piled along the road.  The clean up was made possible through a matching grant to the Nordic Valley Firewise Committee.  The grant from the Utah Department of Natural Resources paid for the brush crew; however, the community must match any costs incurred through sweat equity.  Residents are asked to keep track of hours worked in the yard.  Any yard work that mitigates fire fuel will be given an “hourly wage” and the total wages will be used as a match for community fire prevention projects.

The Nordic Firewise Committee would like to extend thanks to the Utah Department of Natural Resources for the grant, Wolf Mountain for the camping facilities and all the residents that participated.  If you would like information on the Nordic Firewise Committee or Firewise Landscaping, contact Nicole Householder at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
