ogden_canyon_fire_9-12-07.jpgJust on the heals of the Ogden Canyon Fire, Nordic Valley Firewise presents a free landscaping seminar at 6:30pm on September 13 at Wolf Mountain.

Everyone is welcome to attend but the seminar is specifically designed to help Nordic Valley residents landscape their homes to minimize the risk from fire.  Jerry Goodspeed from Utah State University and the Utah Botanical Gardens will be the speaker.  Most people will be surprised at how attractive and easy to maintain the landscaping is.  The myth that all of your trees must be cut will be dispelled!

The August roadside cleanup was the result of a grant awarded to Nordic Valley Firewise Committee from the Western States Wildland Urban Interface Program.  We thank the State Lands, Fire and Forestry worker whose hard work created more attractive and safer right-of-ways.  Future grants are contingent on submission of "In-Kind Match" from local residents and community businesses.

Help yourselves to the mulch and firewood left on the roadsides.  If you do use the mulch or firewood, be sure to fill out the In-Kind Match paper work.  Your time using the mulch and picking up wood around this area counts toward our match!

If you didn't see our booth at the Ogden Valley Balloon Fest, ask your street captain for information about Reverse 911.  Thanks to all of our volunteers during a busy weekend.

Would you like free mulching this spring to dispose of trees and branches you cut from your yard? Of course, you will also be welcome to use the mulch for your gardens and compost piles.  The only way this will happen is by Nordic residents turning in their "in-kind dollars."  We estimate that $7,000 in-kind is needed to match the roadside cleanup that just happened and up to $15,000 in-kind match is needed for the spring mulching.   We can do this if you will fill out the Homeowners In Kind Matching Work Summary every time you work in the yard (or pay someone else to do the work).  It only takes a minute to complete the form.

Homeowners In Kind Matching Work Summaries are on line at www.ogdenvalleyfiresafety.org or from your street captain.  Street Captains are listed below.  If you have any questions please call Nicole Householder at 745-1122.
