Ogden -- Seeing and hearing just one tundra swan is enough to make your
heart jump. Imagine seeing and hearing hundreds of them. You can at
Tundra Swan Day.
You may have seen them in Utah this winter: deer, moose and herds of
elk nipping at salt-covered grass near the side of a road. Most of the
animals you saw were probably alive. But a fair number were probably
dead, killed by vehicles flying down the road.
The
Wild Bird Center leads free nature/bird walks. The cost of the walk,
as we like to say is "enthusiasm." We provide the rest.
We leave the store at 8 a.m., (unless otherwise noted) and carpool to
the destination. The walks are designed for birders at all levels,
especially families. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars.
The Bird Walks are led by Bill Fenimore or other local experts.
The is a flycatcher. It ambushes insects that it
hawks on the wing, as they fly by its perch. Pewee sallies from
an ambush perch take place throughout the day. It will return
to these favorite perches where they can be observed.
Many
birders can tell you the bird they saw that got them "hooked"
into
birding. The hook bird of the late Roger Tory Peterson, famous bird
illustrator, artist and original author of the modern day bird
identification field guide was the Northern Flicker.
